Detecting frontotemporal dementia syndromes using MRI biomarkers

With the aim of developing automated imaging biomarkers to differentiate frontotemporal dementia subtypes from other diagnostic groups and from one another, a retrospective multicenter cohort study was conducted using images from patients with frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, vascular dementia, other dementias, mild cognitive impairment, or subjective cognitive decline. The team derived three MRI atrophy biomarkers from the normalized volumes of automatically segmented cortical regions: 1) anterior vs. posterior index, 2) asymmetry index, and 3) temporal pole left index. The analysis of AUC, sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio indicates that these biomarkers can provide additional information to assist with diagnosing frontotemporal dementia.
